Diane Rowan Garmire - Fiber Artist
The two-dimensional work I create centers on imagination and process, examining the dynamic relationships between individuals and their societies. I frequently employ animals or objects as stand-ins for people to invite nuanced interpretation. My intention is to engage viewers, encouraging them to derive their own understanding from the imagery presented.
Many of my pieces offer reflective commentary on human nature as well as my personal journey. Drawing inspiration from the rich mythologies of various cultures, I purposefully incorporate trickster motifs into my visual storytelling. I encourage audiences to identify recurring symbols within my work and to contribute their own perspectives to the narratives depicted.
As I immerse myself in the world of fiber art, I discover a unique vantage point—one shaped by the transformation of forgotten fabrics and eclectic threads into something wholly new. The act of sculpting with wool unravels its own challenges: hours dissolve beneath my hands as I coax raw fibers into form, each moment demanding my full attention and inviting me deeper into the present. This is a practice that weaves together patience, skill, and determined resolve, thread by thread. Engaging with fibers three-dimensionally is an exploration of both material and my personal self—revealing the subtle interplay of texture, shape, and form. Each piece becomes a tactile meditation, a dialogue between mind and material, where every curve and surface tells its own quiet story within the larger tapestry of my artistic journey.
